Viking Ocean Cruises is a successful cruise company that has earned a good reputation in the world of cruise travel.
Viking Cruises was founded in Basel by Thorsten Hagen, who purchased the first 4 ships in 1997. And in 2000, Viking not only bought a large river cruise company Europe’s KD River Cruises, but was also able to confidently enter the American market by locating its headquarters in Los Angeles.
Viking Ocean Cruises is positioned as an Upper Premium class company. The routes are specifically designed to offer longer port stays than competitors. Including overnight stays so that passengers can take advantage of the nightlife in some cities.
In 2023, the company took 24% of the share of cruises of this class and became the leader in this segment.
Viking Cruises offers 176 cruises and expeditions around the world, including the Caribbean, the Baltic and Europe.
In April 2016, another liner of the same project, Viking Sea, joined the fleet, in 2017 – Viking Sky, Viking Sun. In 2018 and 2019, 2 more ships of the same type were built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy – Viking Orion and Viking Jupiter. On ships of this type there are cabins with balconies and suites only.
In early 2020, Viking announced the creation of the Viking Expeditions division, for which 2 Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris expedition class vessels were built. The first began cruising in January 2022 in Antarctica and the Great Lakes of North America. Viking Polaris debuted in August 2023, traveling to Antarctica and the Arctic. The ships were built by VARD.
The award-winning cruise company Viking Cruises also has a river fleet of over 65 river ships with itineraries featuring Europe’s Rhine, Main, Danube, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Moselle, Elbe, Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers. Viking also offers voyages on Egypt’s Nile River and Southeast Asia’s Mekong River.
